Bringing the layout to life - creating landscape & scenery

Bring your model railway to life in this immersive full‑day course designed for hobbyists who want to transform a basic layout into a rich, realistic miniature world. Through demonstrations, guided practice, and expert tips, you’ll learn the scenic and detailing techniques that give a layout depth, character, and authenticity.

Who This Course Is For

  • Beginners looking for a start in adding scenery to a layout
  • Enthusiasts returning after a break and wanting to refresh their knowledge and look at new techniques
  • Anyone planning to build a home or exhibition layout and seeking expert guidance

Building Realistic Landscapes

The morning focuses on creating natural contours and varied terrain. You’ll explore different methods for adding height—working with open baseboards, building above and below the track bed, shaping insulation and XPS foam, and forming landforms with Modroc and fibremould. These techniques help you create hills, cuttings, embankments, and other features that make a layout feel grounded in a believable landscape.

Weathering and Preparing Track

You’ll then move into track preparation, learning how to use cork for shoulders and track beds, and how to paint and weather track before ballasting. Techniques such as dry brushing, adding rust tones, and subtle colour variation help the track to look more realistic.

Static Grass and Scenic Textures

After lunch, the course turns to scenic layering. You’ll work with 2mm, 4mm, and 6mm static grasses to build up realistic ground cover, learning how different lengths and colours interact to create depth. You’ll also compare basing glue and layering spray with traditional PVA to understand how each affects texture and finish.

Ballasting and Lineside Details

With the groundwork set, you’ll learn how to ballast track effectively, choosing the right grade for your scale and applying it cleanly—especially around points and moving parts. The final session explores finishing touches: weathering track based on real‑world inspiration, adding oil stains, and placing lineside details such as bushes, brambles, fences, trees, and figures to bring scenes to life.

A Practical, Creative Day

By the end of the course, you’ll have a strong understanding of how to turn flat boards and plain track into a visually rich, atmospheric landscape. Whether you’re starting your first scenic project or refining an existing one, you’ll leave with the skills and confidence to elevate your modelling to the next level.

You get to take away the small diorama you have built during the day
