First steps in creating a model railway— Course Description

This one‑day, hands‑on course is designed for anyone eager to begin building their own model railway or deepen their understanding of the hobby. Across a full, structured day of learning, discussion, and practical demonstrations, participants will explore the essential foundations of planning, designing, and constructing a layout that suits their space, interests, and ambitions.

Who This Course Is For

  • Beginners looking for a structured introduction to the hobby
  • Enthusiasts returning after a break and wanting to refresh their knowledge
  • Anyone planning to build a home or exhibition layout and seeking expert guidance

What the Course Covers

Understanding the Basics The day begins with an introduction to model railway eras, scales, and how different systems work together. Participants compare track types, rolling stock, and scale options to understand how these choices shape the look and feel of a layout.

Planning and Preparation A major focus of the course is developing a clear, achievable plan. Through guided activities, you’ll explore sources of inspiration, assess the space available at home or for exhibition layouts, and learn how to use planning tools such as PECO publications, AnyRail, and traditional paper templates. By the end of this session, you’ll have the foundations of a personalised layout plan.

Baseboards and Construction The afternoon shifts to the practicalities of building a solid base for your railway. You’ll compare different baseboard materials—including MDF and laser‑cut plywood—discuss their strengths and limitations, and consider transport and handling needs. A practical construction session follows, giving you confidence in assembling a sturdy, reliable baseboard.

Course Wrap‑Up The day concludes with feedback, information on further PECO courses, and the presentation of certificates.
